Broken Clay Vessels
”But now, O Lord, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.“
Isaiah 64:8
How can you love when your heart is shattered? How can love spill out of a broken clay vessel? A broken pot holds no water. It can't. It has to be pieced back together, just right.
He is the Potter, we are the clay. He holds each of our broken pieces tenderly in the palm of His hand. He even gathers our tears in a bottle.
”You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?“
Psalms 56:8
He understands the depth of our pain. The One who walked this earth unrecognized as the Son of God and the King of Kings, understands earthly pain so very well. Only a handful of followers at His side with just an inkling of who He was. And, even they betrayed and disappointed Him. People will always disappoint you. They are not the Potter, they are merely the clay.
How can broken pieces of clay reassemble and hold love again? How can shattered pieces be put back in order to become the beautiful pottery it once was?
Only by the hands of the Potter. He takes each broken piece and welds it to the next. His love, the gold that skillfully fills each crack. One piece after the other, He unites them until the vessel is restored and the vessel made whole. The clay does nothing. It can't. It rests all over the floor and let's the Potter do His work.
Is your heart broken this Christmas season when all should be calm and all should be bright? Is your clay vessel shattered in pieces and strewn about like glass on a ceramic floor? Do you feel like love is like a pool of water spilled out amongst all the broken pieces, my friend? Do you feel like you will never see how this could work together for your good?
Run to the Potter! Let His Word, like a healing balm soothe your aching heart.
"He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds."
Psalm 147:3
"Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed;
Save me and I will be saved,
You are my praise."
Jeremiah 17:14
He can't heal you if you don't stop and sit at His feet. If busy distraction fills your life, the Potter can't weld the pieces together as they dart to and fro. You must be still in His presence. His Word, like gold, will bond each broken piece back together. He will fill your clay vessel with His love and it will pour out for His glory once again.
And someday, someday soon, He will return!
”Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
Revelation 16:15 NKJV
When He does....
”And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 NKJV
Pray with me...
Heavenly Father,
We worship You. You are the Potter and we are the clay. Take all of our broken pieces and restore our vessels. Fill them with Your love so it can pour out of us. Be glorified in our brokenness. When we are weak, You are strong. Keep our gaze on You this Christmas. Don't let us get caught up in the busy distractions. Deliver us from evil until You return and Your Kingdom reigns.
In Jesus Name, Amen
